EDUCATION / OUR SUBJECTS
On commencement of their education at Ysgol y Rhos all pupils cover place value, time, money and the four operations, in initial lessons, and any gaps plugged. This gives the solid and stable base needed in which to progress with their maths education.
We recognise it is vital to prepare our pupils for adult life, and to be able to cope with all the financial responsibilities they will face. Teaching and learning of basic numeracy skills to all pupils will support this.
Pupils study Number, Algebra, Shape and Space, Geometry and Measure, Probability, Statistics and Data Handling. The schemes of work are flexible and offer differentiation allowing for a tailored progression to the next level. Using paper-based activities are very important (as the examinations are in that form); but we know that all learners are different and so other methods including more practical/hands-on techniques, mathematical games and interactive computer exercises are also used when appropriate.
As well as offering qualification-based courses, we offer intervention lessons for pupils who need extra support in maths. These lessons aim at raising levels of understanding so the pupil can fully access the subject with confidence and reach their full potential.
Our intervention lessons use a mixture of resources and cover all abilities using a range of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic activities to appeal to all our learners.
The overall impact of the successful Maths curriculum at Ysgol y Rhos is the positive engagement and attendance of learners in all lessons which leads onto positive achievement within their learning journey whatever the end result looks like for that pupil, academically, employability wise and holistically.
