English Learning Area overview

The English Learning Area at Ysgol Y Rhos is committed to delivering outstanding learning experiences for all students. We believe in providing them with appropriate pace and challenge which fosters and enhances their learning.

Aims

To enable students to maximise their potential and achieve the highest possible grades in external examinations.
To develop the ability of all students to communicate effectively in a wide range of contexts and situations.
To develop students’ literacy skills to the highest standard.
To develop a love of reading.
To give students the experience of reading a wide range of literature and encourage them to become independent readers.
To develop knowledge and experience of our literary heritage and to motivate students to tackle challenging texts.
To encourage students to develop an interest in extending the range of their own language in terms of style, vocabulary, structure, and form.
Through shared experiences of reading, media studies, discussion, and drama provoke and stimulate a sense of personal and social awareness and an ability to empathize with others.
To develop students’ confidence through drama and other speaking and listening tasks.
To encourage students to be self-critical, reflective, independent learners who are not afraid to take risks.
